Welcome
SRT-4 Fuel Pump Install
These instructions show you how to replace a defective fuel pump or upgrading to a high flow unit in your Neon SRT-4. This install can be done under 2 hours with the help of a friend.
Make sure there is a very small amount of gas left in the tank prior to attempting this install. The less gas the better. I drove around for a couple of days with the empty light on. I went low enough so the empty light started flashing. If you go this low you may want to grab a gallon of gas to drop in the tank after installing the new fuel pump.
- 10mm, 13mm, 15mm sockets
- 10mm wrench
- 3" ratchet extension
- Small flathead screwdriver
- Small pliers
- Strap Wrench
Lower Gas Tank
Lift the rear of the car and place a jackstand on each side of the cross-member, then remove the passenger side wheel. Remove the fuel pump relay located in the fuse panel under the hood, close to the driver side fender. Now crank the car 3 or 4 times until there is no fuel left in the line. Now remove the battery's negative terminal using a 10mm wrench.
Use a 10mm socket to remove the 4 bolts holding the lines and brackets inside of the wheel well.
Locate the fuel pump canister (white) and remove the connections & fuel line. Remove the fuel line by pushing in the 2 blue plastic tabs on each side. Now remove the black connector towards the top by pushing on the tab while pulling. Disconnect the white connector by sliding the red tab out, then push in the white tab and pull out.
Locate the 2 straps supporting the gas tank. You can either drop the entire tank or partially lower it. Loosen the driver side strap using a 13mm, then use a 15mm socket to remove first driver side nut, move the canister out of the way then use a 13mm socket to completely remove the strap.
Remove Fuel Pump Canister
Now that the tank is lowered and the fuel pump canister is free of all connections you can use a strap wrench to remove ring around the canister.
With the canister out of the fuel tank you are now ready to swap the fuel pump. Mark the location of each wire before disconnecting them! You may also use these pictures as a reference when reinstalling the connections.
The following part is tricky. Your kit should include a small red tool needed to access the fuel pump inside of the canister. There are 3 tabs around the canister, slide the red tool's legs between the tabs and carefully push them in to separate the canister, then slide it out. DO NOT use a screwdriver as a replacement for the small red tool.
Install New Fuel Pump
You can now see the old fuel pump and replace it with the new unit. Replace the filters and reconnect all the wires inside the canister by reversing the previous steps.
Replace the black rubber gasket between the tank and the fuel pump canister with the one provided in the kit. You can now slide the canister back in the tank. Make sure it is properly indexed using the mark at the very top of the canister and fuel tank, they should line up.
Now reverse all of the previous steps to complete the job. Tighten the canister ring using a strap wrench. Lift the tank and tighten the straps using a 13mm socket. Connect the black connector, white connector (slide red tap), and fuel line. Connect the bracket for the black canister using a 15mm socket, then use a 10mm socket to tighten the 4 bolts inside the wheel well.
Install the wheel and tighten to 100ft. lbs. then lower the car. Connect the fuel pump relay and battery's negative terminal then crank the car and check for leaks.
