SRT-4 Oil Change Instructions
Keeping up with your SRT-4's maintenance is the most important part of owning your car. You can forget about a bigger turbo and turning up the boost unless you are able to properly maintain your car, this starts with an oil change every 1500-3000 miles depending on your driving. If you spend most of your time on your boost gauge's positive side, then I suggest changing your oil as often as possible. If you take it easy around town you should be OK with changing your oil every 3 months or around 3000 miles.
You have a couple of decisions to make in regards to oil and filter brand. Do some research and find out what others opinions and results are. I have found that Mobil1 Synthetic oil and Mopar oil filter work for me. Oil usually runs me about 20 bucks and the filter is around 5 dollars. These will be your only recurring costs associated to oil changes, the rest will be a couple of hand tools.
- 5 Quartz of your favorite synthetic oil
- New oil filter
- 13mm wrench
- Oil disposal container
- Strap Wrench (optional)
Make sure the car is cool and lift the front making sure it's safe and secure by using a couple of jack stands. Pop your hood and remove the oil cap located on top of the valve cover.
You are now ready to drain the old oil and remove the old filter. Grab your 13mm wrench, oil catch container, a rag and get under the car.
Locate the oil drain plug, it's located on your oil pan near the oil filter as shown below.
Use your 13mm wrench to break the bolt loose. Now place the oil catch container under the drain plug and remove the plug. Allow for all the oil to drain and use your hands to loosen the oil filter. Spin it towards the front of the car. Depending on how difficult it is to remove you may have to use a strap wrench. Worse case scenario there is always the screwdriver and hammer solution, although I do not encourage anyone to take this route. Once the filter is removed just let it drop on the container and wait for the rest of the oil to drain.
You are now ready to install the new filter and reinstall the drain plug. A common trick is to apply some motor oil to the rubber ring on the new filter. Either use the new oil or just slide the filter across your old oil container's surface, it should be covered in old oil.
Install the new oil filter making sure that it's going on straight, don't screw up the cartridge! Slowly tighten it with your hand as much as you can without causing any damage. Now install the drain plug by hand and tighten carefully tighten it using a 13mm wrench.
Your SRT-4's engine holds 5 quartz of oil. Open the container and use a funnel to fill it through the valve cover oil cap. Reinstall the oil cap.
Make sure everything is tight under the car and oil isn't pouring everywhere. You can now lower the car and start it up, check again for leaks while it warms up. Good luck!
